Esp. in the African American community. :(
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
I think it is beautiful. People feel like they have to conform with the census majority of another culture. Also when we were slaves it was taught that our hair was "ugly" , try erasing out a 300 year old stereotype is kinda hard, don't you think. I was raised in a bi-racial home father white, mother African and native American, so I was not raised as one is ugly and the other one is better. It was not until I went to High School did I see how we function in a group about hair and acceptance and love of our hair. I had loose curls that would fall down my back in cascades. My friends had tight curls that puff up on the sides in a Afro puff and I thought it was always beautiful. When you reason on the inside and do not let the outside reason your life or your existence you are so much happier.
peace be to you happy new year!!!

because people still hold old slavery mindsets especially the old people!
Non-blacks don't care about how our hair is. They care if it's clean. Natural hair is fine and also, some people may be JEALOUS of you because they feel that your hair is easy to work on.
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
why wear makeup? why wear deodorant? people think changing themselves improves their looks. ( i fall into that category)
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
is it? i always liked natural hair better on anybody no matter their heritage. i don't know. maybe i'm just funny
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
Because the ruling class in America has taught us all that black hair isn't beautiful.
Slaves always try to imitate their masters.
So back people started trying to have "white" hair.
And those that couldn't achieve it were thought of as inferior.
Those old slave mentalities still plague our community.
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
Because we see commercials about women only having long straight hair. We have yet to see a black woman in the entertainment business sporting a natural on TV as much as we see the ones with long straight extensions.
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
There are no ugly people nor ugly hairstyles nor types of dress. all on earth that is born of earth is beautiful.
What community teaches or sect or religion does not always ring true.

NATURAL IS BEAUTIFUL! I released my hair from the bondage of perms about two years ago. I have never felt so liberated and have never gotten so many compliments on my various natural styles. My hair is the healthiest and longest it has been in I don't know how long. Just like India Arie I found out "I AM NOT MY HAIR". For those who continue to perm, more power to you, but do it because you want to, not because you want to look like our Caucasian friends (They like "ethnic" hair), or fit in with the Jones(whoever they are).

Girl, I don't know. I've been natural since August and I love it, but people seem to think of our natural hair as "bad" hair and needs to be "fixed". I guess it came from the days of old when we were expected (and tried to) assimilate ourselves to the dominate culture in our society. I have noticed more naturals on T.V. commercials over the last few years. Perhaps gradually it will be accepted more and more in mainstream society.
I love that India Arie song, "I am not my hair"

black women are beautiful regardless of what hair type. there is plenty of blame to go around but i feel if u truly love and have respect for yourself you would not allow what others view or think of you.

So have you and your hunny tied the knot yet?
Why is natural hair on Black women such a taboo?
I guess it may depend on where you live also. I live in St. Louis and here natural is beautiful. White and Black people compliment my hair on a daily basis. And everywhere you turn, there is another person with a natural hairstyle. The natural look makes us look stonger in character. I don't think the topic is taboo...maybe more intimidating for some.

Ive worn my hair natural for about seven years and my hair is to my back now....its taboo because people dont teach their kids that natural hair is ok .....the cycle has to break.....if people would educate their children about their hair and stop slapping perms in their hair...... most of the time I get positive compliments but yeah I get the ignorant comments too......it comes from people having the lack of knowledge and ignorance about ones own hair ....sad ...... http://www.nappturality.com/
